PCMS Library was designed in celebration of the 130th anniversary of the Pui Ching Middle School in Hong Kong. In response to the adaptation of digital technology, the project redefines a 21st century school library and creates a sanctuary of knowledge where students are evoked to speak up their minds, share their ideas, and brainstorm with their peers.Visitors enter the library through a portal. Passing through this transitional space, they will arrive at the Hot and Cool zones: the Cool Zone consists of programs that are more formal and private such as the Cabins which are small meeting rooms, individual study areas called the Quotes, and the Forum, an octagonal multi-functional space where lectures, meetings, and performances can take place. The Hot Zone includes more interactive programs such as the Workshop as co-working area, the Lawn as leisure reading area, and the alcove pods as group discussion area. The Hot and Cool Zone was unified with a circulation axis including a circular entrance desk, circular display shelves, and the radiating lighting layout at the ceiling. The newly renovated library with 3000sf was open to students’ use in 5 months’ time and received many positive feedbacks from the students and teachers, marking it a successful project in all aspects. The project has won a&d Awards 2020 Interior Design Best Education Bronze Prize and shortlisted for AIA Hong Kong Honors & Awards 2020.
