The design of Hurricane Maria Memorial commemorates the devastating landslides caused by the hurricane across Puerto Rico and responds to the existing hexagon pavers on The Esplanade site. We proposed to replace 2975 existing hexagon pavers with black encaustic cement hexagon tiles of the same size framed by metal dividers. Representing the number of total deaths officially announced, these selected pavers are laid out in the shape of the map of Puerto Rico. Among the 2975 pavers, 503 of them will be extruded to various heights as precast concrete pillars with cast-in-place bases. These pillars will be marked with victims’ names found from the online database of Hurricane Maria’s victims. Among the 503 pillars, 64 are crowned with chrome metal chimes on top to symbolize the first number of deaths officially announced. An access path is introduced across the forest of concrete pillars based on the track of Hurricane Maria. As the wind blows along with the waves of Hudson River, these chimes will serve as peaceful sirens and whisper the force and power of nature into the visitors’ ears, begging them to take action in preparing against the next hex to be casted by mother nature and be aware of building sustainable and resilient communities across the globe.
