Barge City

Barge City is constructed by a series of convertible components built on barges.  Each component hosts one of the four programs derived from the basic life cycle of sleeping, eating, working, and playing.  These four components would link up to become a living cell during pandemic mode when social distancing and stay-at-home orders are in place.  They can also come apart and anchor along the shoreline as extensions of the city fabric when things are back to normal.  Some examples are: the eating components can be connected as farm-to-table restaurants, the living and working components can be combined as barge hotels, and playing components can be combined as playgrounds or concert venues along the waterfront.
The project is selected for public viewing at the Arts Gowanus “Brooklyn Utopias: Along the Canal” exhibition.
